The Manga Bible
By Siku, illus. / Doubleday
Acclaimed British artist Siku turns his pen towards the Bible, taking up the task of a full presentation of the story of the Bible. Using the modern British style of art that is very reminiscent to manga, Siku covers many high points - and low points - of the Old Testament in narrative form while letting a few shorter parts (Ruth, Jonah, and Psalm 18) punctuate the general flow. The New Testament focuses heavily on the Gospels (with 4 one-page parables) before a giving a treatment of the Acts of the Apostles, with some accompanying text from the epistles. A brief version of Revelation concludes the book.
The stated intention of The Manga Bible is to inspire the reader to study the actual Bible texts, and to help in this mission non-invasive boxes on many pages point the reader to Bible verses where the full story can be found. Many modern elements are used, such as slang, stylized visuals and humor, to shift emphasis off of the non-nuanced scriptural dialogue. This version of The Manga Bible also contains commentary on key scenes, a sketch gallery and an article on the importance of scripture.

Redwall: The Graphic Novel
By Brian Jacques & Bret Blevins / Penguin Putnam Inc.
Matthias wishes to be more strong and courageous like how the legends speak of Martin, the warrior mouse who gave the mice of Redwall Abbey their true vocation, but peaceful times do not require such martial skills. Home to a peace-loving order of mice (and one faithful badger), Redwall falls under siege from Cluny the Scourge and his band of bloodthirsty rats, weasels, foxes and the like. With the situation so dire, and the attackers so ruthless, the Abbey is a dangerous place to be, but Matthias discovers what seems to be his destiny - a destiny seemingly linked with Martin himself! But he has a long way to go before that destiny is realized.
While the Abbey's defenses are challenged from both inside and outside the walls, Matthias starts his search for the military items that Martin used during his campaigns. Journeying both far from the Abbey as well as in its deepest recesses, Matthias encounters friends of the mice, enemies of Cluny, and other hazards that Matthias might be able to turn against the foe, but he must survive them first. Deeds of treachery and of valor cover the pages of this, the first book in the Redwall epic.
Veteran illustrator Bret Blevins adds a visual dimension to Jacques' story, filling each panel with idyllic landscapes, uncluttered but chaotic war scenes, and faithful representations of both the major and minor players in the drama. The characters and scenes, drawn vividly in black-and-white and utilizing pencil shading, are reminiscent of Grahame's or Potter's universes of anthropomorphized animals, although the story matter is for a decidedly older audience. Recommended for ages 9 and up.

Holy Superheroes!: Exploring the Sacred in Comics, Graphic Novels, and Film (Revised and Expanded Edition)
By Greg Garrett / Westminster / John Knox

Now it's Superman, Batman, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. In Holy Superheroes! (updated and expanded to include many recent comics and movies) you will discover how comic books - and the Hollywood adaptations they inspire - can influence our understanding of Good versus Evil, personal sacrifice, duty, and faith.
Comic books have become a twenty-first century mythology. In this book Pulitzer Prize nominated author Greg Garrett explores this mythology and extracts the profound truths that are revealed in the glossy pages, superhuman characters and fast-paced action.
