If you have older, struggling students who are reading and spelling below their grade level, perhaps it's time for Phonics Intervention. This systematic program will put them on the road to reading success! Lorna Simmons, a former classroom and special education teacher, created the program when her oldest son was still having difficulty reading upon finishing second grade.

In keeping with the Saxon philosophy, this curriculum builds on prior learning, and presents information in small, carefully sequenced increments. Covering consonants, vowels, and reading comprehension, the program offers explicit, systematic strategies for decoding and spelling words. Consumable work sheets, speed drills, and vocabulary tests reinforce learning and provide daily reading opportunities. Students also learn dictionary skills through progressively difficult alphabetizing activities.

The teacher's manual includes all lessons, assessments, speed drills, word lists, and reduced versions of student materials. Kit includes a teacher's manual, student workbook, and classroom materials. Grades 4 and up.

The program begins with a quick review of consonants and then moves to vowels, decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension. Students are taught explicit, predictable strategies for decoding and spelling words. Worksheets, speed drills, and vocabulary tests provide continual reinforcement of concepts learned as well as a daily opportunity to read connected text. All student reading material contains fully controlled, decodable text to ensure student success. A built-in vocabulary component helps increase vocabulary while reinforcing phonics and spelling rules. Progressively difficult alphabetizing activities teach dictionary skills. Cumulative assessments occur at regular intervals, and specific remediation activities are provided for students who have difficulty. The last 25 worksheets contain paragraphs that teach students about U.S. history, culture, and government; comprehension questions are provided with every reading passage. Help your struggling readers with Phonics Intervention! Provide concrete examples and consistent practice with these non-consumable classroom materials, which include flash cards, an audiotape of phonetic sounds, and assorted masters. Review decks include letter, picture, spelling, sight word, affix, and vocabulary flash cards; they're intended to be practiced daily and provide repeated exposure to concepts to ensure mastery. The cards are introduced one by one in a carefully controlled sequence by the teacher and only contain material to which students have been exposed. These six decks also provide students with the means to organize information mentally, so that it is easily and quickly retrievable. Letter cards review each letter/letter cluster taught, helping students learn the letter names and recognize letters/letter clusters in print; picture cards feature illustrations that represent keywords, which are used to remind students of specific letter sounds.
