Gold Rush contains a captivating whole language, thematic unit. Its 80 pages are filled with a wide variety of lesson ideas and activities designed for use with intermediate students (upper elementary). At its core are three high-quality children's literature selections(that will need to be purchased or borrowed): Treasure in the Stream, Chang's Paper Pony and By the Great Hornspoon! For each of these books, activities are included which set the stage for reading, encourage the enjoyment of the book, and extend the concepts gained. In addition, the theme is connected to the curriculum with activities in language arts, math, science, social studies, music, art, and life skills. Many of these activities encourage cooperative learning. Space, Intermediate Thematic Unit

Space contains a captivating, balanced-language, thematic unit. Its 80, exciting pages are filled with a wide variety of lesson ideas and reproducible pages designed for use with intermediate children. This book is divided into three chapters: Astronomy is Looking Up, We Become Space Travelers, and Touring the Solar System. Each of these chapters has suggestions for supplemental literature which expands the learning of the students on the topics they are studying. The activities within each chapter are like threads on a loom, weaving together to enable the students to develop their understanding of concepts related to the solar system in which they live. The threads used in this weaving include all areas of the curriculum. Many of these activities are done in cooperative-learning groups to encourage students to exchange and develop their ideas and projects together. Suggestions for interactive bulletin boards and related, extended research projects are provided for the teacher. Furthermore, the culminating activity is a play which applies the students' newly developed understanding of the solar system to create an exciting and informative presentation for other students to enjoy. World War II, Thematic Unit

This is one of the units listed as "challenging" for grades 6-8. The books required to complete this unit are: V Is For Victory by Sylvia Whitman, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, and Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr. The whole language approach used in this unit study enables children of all learning styles to study World War II. Included in the study are daily writing activities in the areas of language arts, social studies, and life skills. Language arts covers World War II vocabulary, headline news, Haiku happenings, and historical fiction. Social Studies includes a time line of world events, heroes from the home front and a changing Germany. Life skills brings to light the sadness of the Japanese Relocation. In math and science, students will learn how it feels to do without and use rationing coupons during the war. They will also research the Manhattan Project and the A-Bomb. The unit culminates with a celebration of the Spirit of America and with writing a class book called "The Long Road to Peace."
